2/29: final files due
week of 3/3: compiled final files go to press
week of 3/17: we review printer proofs
week of 3/24: press check / field trip! [tentatively]
format: 4 x 6 inches
• use horizontal [portrait] orientation regardless of design
• even if your original design was done in other software, you must set up your 4 x 6 inch 'page' in InDesign [import an eps or high-quality 300 dpi pdf.]
• you can do your image work in Photoshop, but straightforward type must be done in Ind. or Ill. so it will not be bitmapped.
ink: 4/1, bleeds
front side is full color (C, M, Y, K) and backside is 1 ink only (black).
• all images, etc. should be set up in Photoshop in CMYK format [not RGB! that's a color profile for monitors, not inks and printing.]
• if you want to ensure close color, check the pantone 4-color process guide and set it to match.
• f you used PMS spot colors to set up your file, simply convert the swatch to process in IND. They won't match dead on.
• set up a .25 in bleed.
Do not add this to your document size, just 'pull' your image, color box, eps, etc. into the pasteboard.
how to save images
• images should be saved at 300 dpi at 100% size.
neither scaled down from enormously large images OR 'stretched' up.
• Images must be saved as CMYK tiff format.
JPEG is a compressed file format for portability, not for printing.
digital proof:
• create a pdf proof or use as a visual reference for the printer. include in the pdf name PROOF_ONLY.
how to gather your files:
• run PREFLIGHT (under file menu) to make sure you have no pre-press issues like missing fonts or RGB images [not that some will show up as missing even if they don't appear in your design. they can be in the 'invisible spaces.' In this case go to FIND FONT (under type menu) and replace them.
• PACKAGE your file (under files menu)
This will ensure that all linked fonts and images are included.
• Place entire folder, including the pdf proof, named with your name, in my public folder.
common issues:
• converting text to outlines: this can keep font problems from occurring but can also be problematic if you find an error on the proof later in the process: then the printer can't fix it.
back of card:
• use K only.
• include all names, exhibition name and dates, opening dates and proper return address.
• follow these postal restrictions in your layout:
